Created in the year 1913, the American College of Surgeons is an educational association that consists of surgeons and is headquartered in the city of Chicago, Illinois. The College bestows memberships to doctors around the world who specialize in surgery and pass a rigorous set of qualifications.
The objective of the American College of Surgeons is to improve the quality of care for patients of surgery through the establishment of high standards for practice and surgical education. The members of the American College of Surgeons are referred to as 'Fellows'.
Today, there are about 78,000 members of the American College of Surgeons, which includes more than 58,000 Fellows in the United States and Canada, and over 4,000 Fellows across the globe in other countries. The American College of Surgeons is the biggest organization of surgeons on the planet. There are 103 chapters of which ACOS Fellows belong to and are organized within. Two chapters in Canada, 64 in the United States, and 37 in other countries across the globe.
The College operates a number of sub-organizations and activities, including its Inspiring Quality Initiative, which is intended to drive awareness about the Colleges' quality improvement programs including the ACOS National Surgical Quality Improvement Program and the ACOS NSQIP Pediatric. The goal of the Inspiring Quality Initiative is to enable the organization to have a dialog and cooperative with health care powerhouses throughout the nation, lead the health care system towards the right direction, and improve surgical care.
